THURNE MOUTH OPEN REGATTA
A report by Hilary Franzen
Despite flood defence work, re-landscaping the river bank, and cold, wet and windy weather, the 63rd Thurne Mouth Open Regatta rose like a phoenix on the May spring bank holiday weekend, May 29th –31st.
The buzz at the three day, non-stop waterside party which features some of the best sailing on the Broads by day and live bands and a bar by night, was better than ever.
The regatta started in sombre mood as competitors and officers stood for a minute’s silence in memory of Pat Larner, a vice president and trustee who had died two days before. He had been due to run the racing on Saturday. Instead the club flag flew at half mast.

The traditional TMOR bank holiday weather prevailed which brought out the sharp sailing skills of its competitors. Twenty five river cruisers and a sprinkling of keel boats turned up. The first race for the Lady Caroline Cup was sailed in steady rain and a freshening southerly wind. It was won appropriately by an all lady crew in Hilary Franzen’s Martlet, with a lady called Caroline on board. But with the wind increasing only three out of the eight entrants summoned up the energy for the race for the local boats.

Sunday was a day of drama as the anemometer rose to over 30 knots, lightning flashed, and it became a struggle for survival of the fittest. Eighteen of the 20 cruisers which started in the first of two races for the Ames Cup finished. But by the afternoon, with race officers trying to hold down the race tent, only four ventured out. Paul Stevens had to pump out the cockpit of Amaryllis a few minutes before the start, and put in a second reef. Anthony Landamore, crewed by his family, displayed some amazing seamanship skills in view of spectators by recovering after a hire boat hit his cruiser Matilda, and putting in a second reef during the race. They were the only two that finished.

The rest of the day’s racing was abandoned as winds rose to gale force by the evening and parts of the race tent blew away.

The weekend belonged to Colin Little who scooped a hat trick in Moss Rose with the Herbert Woods Trophy for local boats on Saturday, the Ollerenshaw Cup on Monday and the magnificent Cock of the Broads trophy and Fantome Barometer for the flagship cruiser passage race, which attracted 17 starters.
Paul and Jane Stevens won the Ames Cup and were second in the Cock of the Broads, winning the Catriona and Frosty Cups. The Ladybird Trophy for the fastest Cock of the Broads passage was won by Richard Parker, the event’s principal sponsor, in Starlight Lady. Just as the prize-giving began the wind dropped and the sun came out!

THURNE MOUTH OPEN REGATTA 2010
from our own correspondent Malcolm Duffield
This year I was able to get some time off to help with the setting up. I contacted Jimmy to offer help and to also offer to be on the start line Saturday afternoon. It was arranged to meet Thursday at about 10 by which time it was hoped that the tent would be up.
The previous week I met Jimmy who told me Pat Larner was ill and could not run the line so I offered to do that. I was lucky enough to get my friend Richard to help, as he was an experienced race officer. Later I was informed that Pat had passed away. I did not know Pat very well but I did join him on the start line for the Sunday of TMOR last year. In the morning there were 3 of us to run the line Pat was OOD John was there as flag officer and myself as timekeeper. When I say that John was flag officer what I really meant to say was that he was there to talk with Pat, which is what they did. This was in spite of me pleading with them to lower flags at the appropriate time. It was an enjoyable day and great to see 2 friends have a good time also. I think that overall there was good racing. I was looking forward to being with Pat again this year.
Thursday. Heads up roll sleeves up and let’s get on with it then. Millions of worker ants arrived on site (well a good dozen or more) with trailers and vans and muscle to help set up. I was also there. Having walked all the way from home to join the party I then got a lift all the way back to empty the shed and load it, sorry the contents of it, onto trailers to take back to the tent. Then back for the beer. Fortunately Dr Tom’s trailer was the same level as the dray so it was easy for the barrels to be unloaded. Back on site the barrels were then transferred into wheelbarrows and taken into the tent where the bar was set up. By mid afternoon most of the work was done and Ian (Pirate) suggested that there should be a helpers race on Friday.
That evening I had a bit more work on Waif including fitting a gaff that I am trying out. This being done Waif went back to her mooring. My idea was to rig her Friday afternoon so she was ready for Sunday racing.
Friday. Work finishes early so get chance to get robbed at a well known chandlery on the way home. Have got some bits and pieces I went to Waif. As I was there I rang Jimmy who kindly offered to assist, even though he was enjoying a cold beer. We worked away until I had to leave (had to catch the ferry to Upton for fish and chips). Bless him Jimmy stayed and finished putting the main sail on for me including lacing it. A very good job well done although I thought the lacing should be:
a. Along the gaff, and not from gaff to boom
b. In one length and not a jigsaw.
As we went by on the way to Upton he was still working away. Didn’t get a price from him, hope it doesn’t cost me ‘a favour’J. The F&C very good as usual.
Saturday. To the tent for the morning rush. Marks were set with assistance of Ian. Richard arrives and then John arrives and he is flag officer for the racing. Skipper asks that there is a quick briefing before racing starts so that we can have a minutes silence for Pat, followed by a few words from John. A crowded tent then paid their respects for Pat and acknowledged the work and commitment he had put in for EACC over many years. As John said he will be missed by not only his family and friends but also this club.
There was then the usual briefing “the A mark is somewhere down that way; the B mark is up there a while, and the C mark is just outside.” This was not good enough and some skippers wanted to have a rough idea of exactly where the marks were.
Briefing over John Richard Charles and I set off to the point to prepare. Dr Tom and Mary joined us so that he could have a look at how it should be done (picked the wrong one here I thought) as he was Race Officer on Sunday. A lively southerly wind had set in and 20 odd cruisers (with 20 odd crews) entered the afternoon race. 5 starts immaculate timekeeping, thank you Richard, and with flags running freely up and down they were off giving Mary the chance of some photographs. There followed Allcomers and White Boats and finally local boats. No mishaps. Gofer very good at supplying liquid refreshment for us, oh and cake. Racing over it was back to the tent for a quick beer before going home and out to a party. Sorry could not make the entertainment. Did hear it when we got back though.
Sunday. The wind had changed to Northish followed by Westish and points in between. Today I intend to go racing. I decided that with the 3RR next weekend caution is called for so a reef is required. Having got slightly behind schedule and with the 5 min gun about to go I haul the sail up only to discover too late that a reefing line was round the boom (here insert several expletives and gnashing of teeth). Sail off again, it was such a shame to disturb the lacing Jimmy had so painstakingly done on Friday. Then panic, who will be able to repair it in time. Fortunately I found someone and it was back with me by Tuesday. I watch the racing and although it was exciting I am actually glad I was not out there as I had no idea how Waif would be with the other gaff on. Had to run in and out of the tent due to weather conditions and at one time I thought the marquee was going to leave us. Unfortunately the club tent was damaged by the very strong gusts.
Racing in the afternoon postponed and then abandoned because of the weather.
Monday
For me it’s safety boat duty. I go out with Mark and check the buoys are in position so that Hugh can get underway. A quick crew change sees Jo of Sun Glory join me on the boat. The wind was still, well windy, but not as bad as Sunday. There are several cruiser starts followed by Allcomers and white boats. A good days racing for all. In the morning we were advised of a boat being stuck on the Upton bank near to the Acle mark, so went to investigate. Sure enough it was stuck fast and needed help. Jo and I managed to get her off and the crew were grateful and gave us a £20.00 donation for club funds. Shortly thereafter the tow rope decided to dance with the prop until it stopped turning. A call to race control soon had Mark come to assist. We managed to free the rope off and fortunately motor started first time and more importantly it went into gear. As we prepared to get back on station Tom Tit engine decided not to work for reasons best known to itself. Therefore the boat that had rescued another and then need rescuing itself, was able to rescue its own rescuer. Tom Tit was returned to base and once there the engine decided to work again without any repairs necessary. We had to tow a river cruiser to her moorings as there was a bit of a gear failure. Once the racing was over and the silverware handed over it was time to remove everything back to the shed
