EACC / YSC Joint Social Report

I thought it would be a good idea if I volunteered to organise (or try to) this EACC hosted event, at my local pub, The White Horse in Upton. It has been struggling recently and is now being run by a new management team. They need all the support they can get.

My worry that no one would come and enjoy the pub's new menu proved unfounded as 28 people from the two clubs enjoyed socialising, drinks and an excellent meal. It was great to see so many people. A good time was had by all. In fact, like me, everybody was so busy enjoying themselves that nobody remembered to take any photographs!

On behalf of everyone who came, we'd like to thank Ian for stepping up to organise this, our first event of 2024. Well done Ian!

SUMMER FUN DAY 2024

Saturday, 7th September

New for 2024 was the Summer Fun Day, which was a fun and relaxed event and a great way to involve friends and family in spending time on the water. The day was designed for teams to complete a few challenges whilst having a leisurely sail or motor and spend time together on their boats.

The briefing in the morning outlined the format for the day, which involved five challenges for the teams to complete. These were:

  • Scavenger hunt – collect 10 specific items from a list, including a tea bag, a rhond anchor, a feather, and an item of clothing from another team
  • Photography challenge – take photos of 20 items or places whilst on the water, however to ensure no cheating by using old photo’s teams had to nominate an inanimate object that had to appear in every photo to confirm they have been taken on the day – the list included Acle bridge, a Herbert Woods boat, another competing team, a kingfisher and a team selfie.

  • Observational questions – 14 questions to answer by looking out for things on the water, for example the number of yellow buoys at Thurne Mouth, the number of wooden mooring posts at St Benets, and the time of the Daily Specials at Acle café.
  • Dingbats – there were 20 nautical themed dingbats for the teams to decipher
  • Sailing quiz – 15 questions on the ‘Rules of the River’ for the teams to answer

Following the briefing the teams took time to read through the challenges and then made a plan for their day, working out where they had to head to in order to answer all the observational questions whilst looking out for the photography challenge and working through the other questions. There were 3 teams competing, which were Team Pippinjack, Team Elisabeth (incorporating Team Evergreen) and Team Bewitched.

As this was a fun day this wasn’t a race, and there was plenty of time for the teams to stop and moor for lunch and still return by 4:30pm to submit their answers and present their scavenger items before the results would be announced.

The teams headed off, and over the next few hours the photo’s were submitted for the photography challenge, with the inanimate objects being a whisk (Team Pipinjack), a blue fork (Team Elisabeth) and a toy giraffe (Team Bewitched).

All the teams returned in time and the answers were collated, and then following revealing the answers to the questions (which included a few challenges over the number of mooring posts counted!!) the winners were revealed. Incredibly just 2 points separated the 3 teams, with Team Pippinjack taking the honours of the winning team.

Many thanks to everyone that participated in the event, the overwhelming feedback was that this was great fun to participate in, so we will look to repeat this again in 2025 with a few new challenges for the teams.
