Wednesday  20th May 2026 - The sun was shining, the temperature had risen and the forecast was a sunny weekend to come! We were thrilled to drive to the Tmor site to find not only the Marquee in place, but a working party led by Marty Thompson, who had worked their magic on Tuesday evening, the bar and catering areas, fridges etc were all in place!  However Claire still had a clipboard with multiple tasks still to be completed. Thanks to the willing volunteers, fridges. chairs and tables were cleaned, gazebos erected. The next job was the race control site to be set up, three of us crossed the river only to find that due to our combined lack of camping experience , we couldn't make sense of the pile of poles, canvas etc! Fortunately some more skilled help arrived later. Meanwhile the bar and catering areas were being stocked with the multitude of supplies needed for hungry and thirsty sailors and supporters. after three days of much activity, the site was ready!

This year's TMOR will go down in history as one of the warmest with temps in excess of 30C. The days started off flat calm but gradually a decent, steady breeze arrived.

Saturday racing was generally light with short courses. A new record was set on Saturday afternoon with the bar starting to sell out of beer and cider. Fresh supplies were
urgently brought in ready for an excellent evening of food and music. Reportedly the beef bourguignon was superb.
I was OOD for Sunday morning which meant an early start laying the marks with Ian and Fiona. Along with Kim Dring the four of us then went to the point to start the racing. RO nightmare, little wind and strong tide meant a short postponement before setting a 2 round short course. This was shortened to 1.5 rounds and a delayed start for the next series.

We finally got the programme back on time for the Cruiser race and the next RO Ian Richardson. By now the wind had piped up so went and moved the A mark further downriver, ably assisted by Ian and Fiona. Having done our duty we adjourned to the bar for a beer or 2 or 3. It was now Ian`s turn and, despite putting only 4 boats in the 1st start, 6 boats started!!  They did come back and start again. The band in the tent on Sunday Night was excellent and loud. Fortunately fresh beer supplies were obtained and the food was very good.
The main race on Monday is  the Cock of the Broads, the conditions meant that it was one of the best sails for a long time. Congratulations to James Dugdale 2 wins in a row!!!!

After prizegiving lots of people stayed to help pack up and this was much appreciated. A fantastic event that is a pleasure to be involved in, if the weather gods are listening, please could we have the same conditions next year!

No Rain, Blue Skies, Light Winds, are we really at TMOR 2026?

Yes, we were! I’ve enjoyed many great TMORs over the years, but this one stood out, with lighter winds, glorious sunshine, and the company of great friends, oh and no Mud although that was quite fun too.

We headed to the regatta a little earlier this year with our BOD and enjoyed a couple of extra nights moored on the riverbank with our small flotilla, sharing a barbecue, a few beers, and the beautiful weather. Looking across the river, we could see the good old beer tent was up and the finishing touches were being completed for what was going to be another excellent TMOR.

Racing at Thurne can be challenging and with a growing number of competitors chasing the best starting position you need to stay alert. My crew and I usually discuss our start group and starting pennant, although we did get it wrong a couple of times much to other competitors’ amusement, finding ourselves 3 minutes late for our start, well it was the first race of the day!

The river can get congested at times as different fleets pass head-to-head and a steady stream of holiday boat hirers handling large boats pass by who must think we are a mad bunch who can’t sail in a straight line (well maybe that’s sometimes true).

But when it all comes together, Thurne is a wonderful place to sail, with long broad reaches, fast runs, and plenty of beating. The different classes of boats on the water racing at any time make a great spectacle and it’s always exciting to watch the river cruiser do battle on such a narrow river.

EACC’s members are such a welcoming bunch of people and with their team of volunteers put on such a fantastic TMOR every year. The race officers do a grand job of setting courses that make best use of the wind direction, the bar crew happy to serve you, the catering team put on a great spread and the evening entertainment is always fun and energetic and almost always leaves you waking up the next day a little fuzzy!

Quite simply, a sailing regatta that pops up on the riverbank for a few days of awesome “unregulated” fun and one of my family’s favourite regattas which is firmly inked in the diary for ever!

Thanks to all that make TMOR the best!
