The preparation for the regatta was interrupted 2 weeks beforehand when we learned of a change in the Racing Rules of Sailing, which effectively meant bowsprits were no longer included as part of the hull! After an anxious few days, the RYA provided suggested wording to include in the Notice of Race which effectively meant no change for us. This will be the norm for all racing events.

The day itself started bright and warm, with light winds forecast to drop a little during the day. And not so bright and warm later… Despite the less than attractive forecast, 12 intrepid crews were determined to shake off the lockdown and do some yotting!

The first start, downstream, was at 11.00. All but one (no names, Paul) were varyingly line shy, normal for the first racing of the season! Inevitably on a light airs day, the wind backed 2 hours early and continued to swing about, meaning where some lucky yots reached, others had to beat. Setting a shortish course down and up the Bure and up the Thurne allowed for a variety of points of sail, whatever the wind direction.

Mischief (Di and Steve Seeney) inexplicably tried to moor where no mooring existed after rounding the upper mark, but escaped damage and completed the race. Wandering Rose (Team Wandering Rose) was first home over the water (no surprises there) but she lost out on corrected time by just 4 seconds to Moss Rose (Paul and Claire Markham), with Pippinjack (Paul and Jane Stevens) another 36 seconds behind.

A leisurely and socially distanced lunch break (mostly nose into the reeds) gave opportunity for neighbouring crews to catch up, while the wind unexpectedly veered to the north west and dropped, clearly caused by an approaching, ominous black cloud.

For the second race, the upstream Bure mark was left out in case the wind dropped further and the course should have been beat / broad reach up the Thurne and down the Bure. However, shortly after the start, the heavens opened, providing a brief, but spectacular, sound and light show, but once it passed over it settled over the coast and established a rather cool easterly for the remainder of the afternoon. So much for weather forecasts! The course then became a reach each way. But no-one complained, they were all so happy to be out playing again!

Proceedings were rudely interrupted by Tinkerbell, when her peak halyard came undone and the main fell down! Fortunately, the only injury was Adrian and Ruth Lincoln’s pride. Meanwhile, a procession of heavy showers and a drop in temperature failed to dampen everyone’s enthusiasm and it was all smiles at the finish.

Wandering Rose was again first home, but this time had to settle for 3rd behind Pickle (Phil Montague) in 2nd and Moss Rose again taking the bullet.

Many thanks to Mike and Babs Barnes for manning the safety boat and John Aves for helping on the line and dealing with results, despite the technical challenges! Special thanks to Kath and Ian Mason for the loan of the Gazebo – it was a life saver!

The atmosphere for the day was nothing short of jubilant! Everyone took the dodgy weather in their stride and had an absolute ball. Long may all that continue!

Thanks also to Colin and Liz for manning the line in such challenging circumstances!
