SUMMER REGATTA
Took place Saturday 12th - Sunday 13th July 2025

A north easterly breeze greeted the Saturday morning of the summer regatta, starting off reasonably gentle but forecast to fill in later. First time OOD Cally Smith set a fairly short course for the Thurne roundabout race hoping that there would be plenty of time for various crew members to embarrass their normal helms. In fact there were 30 rounds completed in total, and a quick glance at the result sheet will show exactly who was embarrassed and who shone. The earlier starters, whilst having a lighter wind did benefit from its steadiness, whereas the later starters, whilst having a slightly stronger breeze were undone by it's fickle nature, particularly around Thurne mouth, and the increase in traffic. It was a beautiful day though, and an excellent sail. A very convivial evening was spent on the moorings, and Cally was very pleased to have got through her first OOD stint with no calamities and only a medium to high level of stress!

Sunday started overcast with a similar wind as we welcomed Steve Seeney as OOD. Deciding to start the round the cans racing from the club moorings and lengthen the beat up to Coldharbour was not greeted with universal approval, but 11 boats in 3 starts coped comfortably without incident, and a close fought morning race saw Matt Ford and Mystery beating the Saturday winner Pickle by just 48 seconds on corrected time.
The lunchtime break saw 3 less boats line up for the afternoon race, and another incredibly close fought battle saw 37 seconds separate the first three, Pippinjack taking the honours by 6 seconds from Swallowtail.
All in all, a really good weekends sailing with lovely weather, a good breeze, an excellent turnout and the blooding of a new OOD - and by the way we really need more volunteers for this role, so if you fancy helping on the line at any future regattas to get some experience please contact the second mate Cally and offer your services, it is actually quite fun!
Thanks to all the competitors, to everyone who helped set up and take down, to Ian and Mike for safety boat and particularly to Cally, Steve, Tom, Barbara and Joe for taking on the responsibility of running the racing. Without you guys it just wouldn't happen.

Addendum
There was a promising start to Sunday with sunshine and a light NNE wind. The wind stayed but the sunshine soon went with even some light drizzle late morning.
11 boats entered and were split into 3 starts which proved to be somewhat challenging with an almost square beat up river to the C mark. One lap proved sufficient to give the fleet around an hours race.
With the wind unchanged and a reduced fleet of 8 boats the 3 starts were less challenging with the exception of start 2 which involved a large Dutch barge motoring through the line with less than 2 minutes to go followed by a large hire cruiser deciding that the best place to moor was right across the start line on the Thurne bank as there was a handy mooring post with a big red triangle on it. He was very relucant to move and remonstrated loudly that we had no right to ask him to move. He eventually did so with only seconds to go.
